The NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is one of the most popular degree-level qualifications for health and safety professionals.
The International Diploma increases candidates' ability to help organisations make sensible and proportionate decisions in managing risks. This supports their business objectives and regulatory requirements — delivering positive change in the workplace.
The NEBOSH Diploma covers the practical skills that are essential to health and safety professionals. We assess candidates’ ability to apply their knowledge in real-world settings and teach them how to deliver positive change in the workplace.
Who is this course suitable for?
The NEBOSH International Diploma is ideal for health and safety professionals wishing to advance their career anywhere in the world. This includes safety managers, advisors and consultants.
There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH International Diploma; however, we recommend completing the NEBOSH International General Certificate first, as the Diploma syllabus assumes that learners will have this level of prior learning.
The course is split into three separate assessments: One workplace assignment and two scenario-based case studies.
The qualification units are assessed in the following way:
ID1 – Know – workplace health and safety principles.
ID2 – Do – controlling workplace health issues.
ID3 – Do – controlling workplace safety issues.
- Effectively manage health and safety.
- Identifying and controlling risks associated with hazardous agents, workplace issues and equipment.
- Management of workplace stress.
- The importance of human factors in reducing incidents.
- Support and develop your company’s health and safety culture.
When combined with further professional development, the NEBOSH Diploma meets the standards required to achieve Chartered Safety Practitioner (CMIOSH) status.
On completion of the NEBOSH International Diploma, you will be entitled to use “DipNEBOSH” after your name and apply for Graduate Membership with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (GradIOSH). It also allows full membership to the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
The qualification requires a minimum of 185 taught hours plus 144 recommended self-study hours and 140 assessment hours.

The assessments focus on the application of knowledge to help you prepare for the health and safety tasks faced in the workplace.Each assessment is a substantial undertaking. We anticipate that it will take you around 60 hours to complete the ID1 assignment and 40 hours each for the ID2 and ID3 case studies. The time-period given for you to complete each assessment reflects this:
Unit ID1: 6 weeks (30 working days)
Unit ID2: 4 weeks (20 working days)
Unit ID3: 4 weeks (20 working days)

When and how will I receive my NEBOSH results?
Results are notified by NEBOSH after completing the course. NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificates will arrive after the results have been announced.

Your certificate or diploma is sent to you by Phoenix after the results have been announced. Your certificates will arrive from Phoenix 10-12 weeks after the results have been announced.
What happens if I fail the NEBOSH assessment?The Phoenix Pass Pledge will cover your additional studies, but you retake the exams at your own cost.
Are there any entry requirements for NEBOSH National or International Diploma?There is no formal entry requirement. However, achievement of the NEBOSH National General Certificate, or a direct equivalent (level 3), is highly recommended before undertaking the Diploma course.
An appropriate standard of English language is also essential for students to understand the syllabus and articulate the concepts it contains. NEBOSH recommends a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 or higher.
